Cabreiroa

Cabreiroá presents the first 100% compostable, biodegradable and plant-based water bottle in Spain. The brand of natural mineral water from Galicia, belonging to Sons of Rivera group, bet on a sustainable packaging made entirely of renewable sources that, in addition, in its decomposition does not generate waste or release substances that affect the environment. In terms of production, it is expected to considerably reduce the carbon footprint of the container compared to that of those made with traditional materials, maintaining the same taste and quality of the water.

The result of a long and profound process of innovation, the new water bottle presented by Cabreiroá is produced with PLA, a biobased polymer, which originates from sugar cane. This material makes it possible to reduce the negative impact of plastic waste on the health of the planet, since its degradation in a composting plant does not generate waste. PLA, due to its unique characteristics of biodegradability and compostability, decomposes in a much shorter time than other containers, provided it goes through an industrial composting process under optimal temperature and humidity conditions. Thus, the PLA bottle will degrade 100% in less than 90 days.

During the development process of this container, both the composition of the labels, also made with PLA and therefore 100% biodegradable and compostable, as well as the use of organic bottle pigments and inks that are totally sustainable and substance-free, have been taken into account. harmful to the environment. The biodegradability and compostability of the bottle and its labels, according to the UNE-EN 13432:2001 standard, has been tested and validated with the ITENE accredited technology center, the Technological Institute of Packaging, Transport and Logistics. The great depth in terms of research and industrial adaptation that this project entails will imply a slow and progressive incorporation of this bottle into the market.

"Sustainability is a global task and is one of the top priorities of the company and of all of us who work in it, whether it is minimizing the generation of waste, betting on reuse and recovery, or looking for new, more sustainable materials, thus betting for the care and regeneration of the environment. For this reason, the Origin Project has been launched, of which this initiative is a part, with which we want to promote innovative measures that contribute to making a more efficient use of resources”, he affirms. Alvaro Garcia de Quevedo, Director of the Water and Healthy Beverages Business of Hijos de Rivera.

Cabreiroá Origin Project

This new packaging is part of the positive impact strategy with which the company seeks new proposals every day so that its activity has the best possible impact on its environment.

Cabreiroá Origin Project was born with a clear purpose: to generate a positive impact on the planet through a series of strategies that always keep respect for nature in mind, and that contribute to improving the world through the efficient use of resources, promoting the circular economy and promoting society to action.

This project is based on three initiatives:

  • Manantial Carbono Neutral: the company has been working for years to achieve emissions neutrality at the Manantial de Aguas de Cabreiroá through an ambitious plan to reduce the carbon footprint that has transformed the day-to-day of the organization in favor of the use of cleaner energy.
  • Environmental activism: Cabreiroá collaborates with different projects and organizations that seek the mobilization and involvement of society as the necessary agent to achieve change.
  • Eco-packaging: one of the company's commitments is the use of sustainable packaging that generates less waste. Within this initiative is the new 100% plant-based, biodegradable and compostable water bottle.
