compostable labels for fresh produce

Coveris and TIPA Compostable Packaging have signed an exclusive agreement to manufacture and market compostable labels for fresh produces in the United Kingdom. This collaboration responds to growing market demand and strict regulatory requirements for the compostability of adhesive labels.

After extensive testing of commercially available options, Coveris selected TIPA's home-compostable label material for its excellent performance and applicability across a wide range of fruits and vegetables. TIPA's new film offers moisture resistance while maintaining its flexibility, allowing adhesive labels to adhere firmly to products that often have moist or varied surfaces. This durability allows for consistent application on products such as apples, citrus fruits, kiwis, and avocados, without compromising compostability. As a specialized packaging partner with experience, expertise, and expertise in the produce sector, Coveris is trusted by numerous leading brands and retailers to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions.

“We are proud to partner with TIPA to introduce a new compostable labeling solution for the fresh produce sector,” he commented. Will Mercer, R&D Director of Coveris' Paper Business Unit"By combining TIPA's expertise in compostable materials with Coveris' advanced printing technology and its knowledge of the agricultural supply chain, we have developed a high-performance label that meets environmental, operational, and regulatory requirements. In line with our Zero Waste strategy, we are focused on developing sustainable packaging and reducing waste in all its forms."

This collaboration offers a scalable and sustainable solution for retailers, packers, and producers seeking to meet both consumer demand and regulatory requirements. Deadlines for mandatory use of compostable labels on fresh produce are approaching in the EU, New Zealand, and Australia. In the UK, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and the UK Plastics Pact are supporting the market transition to compostable solutions for this application. This shift reflects the growing recognition of produce stickers as a source of plastic contamination in organic waste streams. A recent study identified them as one of the three most persistent pollutants in composting facilities.

“This collaboration goes beyond labels: it's about eliminating unnecessary plastic from the food system,” he said. Gary Tee, Vice President of Global Conversion at TIPA“Our certified home-compostable label material offers high performance and, equally importantly, offers brands a sustainable option. Collaborating with Coveris allows us to combine our expertise and offer a solution that eliminates conventional plastic labels from the organic waste stream and complies with upcoming regulations.”
