Coveris receives the Green Packaging Star Award for closing the plastic cycle

With its new ReCover business division and an industry-leading recycling process, the packaging manufacturer covers turns printed film into high-quality recycled material, thereby closing the plastic loop. This sustainable production process received the prestigious Green Packaging Star Award at the FachPack trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany (24-26 September).

Coveris’ ReCover has won the Green Packaging Star Award in the “Environmentally friendly production process” category. As part of its “Zero Waste” sustainability strategy, which won the Green Packaging Star Award two years ago, the packaging manufacturer has already set itself the goal of eliminating all types of waste. The ReCover division, created at the end of 2022, brings together the company’s recycling activities and ensures that plastic remains in the cycle with a pioneering recycling process.

At the heart of ReCover is Coveris’ deinking technology. When printed films become granulated, the recycling result is not optimal. This is because ink residues automatically lead to lower-quality recyclates. To achieve a top-quality result, solutions are therefore needed that prevent recyclates from being contaminated with ink. ReCover enables the production of this recyclate (called ReGen) from production waste, which is a sustainable alternative to virgin raw materials and can be reprocessed into packaging films without loss of quality.

“Winning the Green Packaging Star Award is a fantastic recognition of our innovative capabilities and our ongoing commitment to sustainable production. In line with our Zero Waste strategy, we have created ReCover as a new business unit that groups together all plastic recycling. In doing so, we are making a valuable contribution to the circular economy,” he says. Katja Killian, Coveris’ business development director. “I would also like to highlight that this award recognises the efforts of a team. Without our excellent team, ReCover would not have been possible.”
