PlasticsEurope, the pan-European association of producers of plastic raw materials, supports the objective of prevent and reduce excess packaging and waste of containers. Therefore, it values positively the revision of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD), key legislation for the transition of the industry towards a circular economy of plasticsEuropean plastics producers support the proposal of the European Commission to set a goal of mandatory recycling content for packaging 30% plastics by 2030.

PlasticsEurope members are already working to achieve this goal by investing billions of euros in cutting-edge technological solutions and ensuring a greater supply of high-quality recycled plastics. To do this, increase the chemical recycling It is essential in order to achieve this mandatory goal. In this sense, the investments planned by its members in this essential technology and infrastructure range from 2.600 million euros in 2025 to 7.200 million euros in 2030 throughout Europe.

In the words of Markus Steilemann, President of PlasticsEurope and CEO of Covestro: “The world must embrace the circular economy as a key concept for climate neutrality, resource conservation and environmental protection. The call for a regulated recycling content target for plastic packaging in the EU demonstrates our commitment to accelerate the transformation towards a circular economy, thus helping to implement the Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Green Deal. '

Virginia Janssens, Managing Director of PlasticsEurope, commented: 'We need a harmonized policy framework within the EU that provides certainty and incentivizes further investment in collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure and technologies, including chemical recycling. We must harness the power of the single market. However, systemic change requires concerted collaboration. We can only achieve this objective by working closely with the European institutions and the value chain. Under the right conditions, our industry will be very different in 10 years 'time.'

La Circular Plastics Alliance of the European Commission is an excellent example of the kind of concerted collaboration needed. The alliance, in which PlasticsEurope plays a leading role, brings together more than 290 members of the value chain who are striving to make 2025 million tonnes of recycled plastic available by 10 for the manufacture of new products in the European Union.
