Lidl launched the first 100% reusable and recyclable bakery bag from a supermarket chain. This new proposal is made from rPET, recycled plastic, and is part of the company's strategy to reduce the use of plastic and include at least 25% recycled plastic in all its packaging by 2025.

Since the first phase, as announced at the end of July, Lidl's rPET bread bag has been available in four stores in Mallorca (Palma-Ikea, Pollença, Sa Pobla and Can Picafort) and in the three that the company currently has in Ibiza with a retail price of 0,99 euros. In the following weeks, the initiative has been extended to all stores in the Balearic Islands.

Pioneering company in responsible use of plastic

In 2018, Lidl joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which represents more than a thousand organizations behind a common vision: a circular economy for plastics. The initiative aims to redesign the future of plastics, starting with packaging.

The company has already pioneered several measures regarding the responsible use of plastic. In addition to being the first chain to eliminate plastic bags from its line of boxes or single-use items made of this material, it is also promoting the replacement of plastic packaging with cellulose or compostable materials in its entire range of organic fruit and vegetables.

Over the past six years, the chain has already redesigned more than 400 of its own-brand items, which has meant the complete replacement of plastic with other materials, using more recycled plastic and/or achieving greater recyclability of its packaging. Currently, 44% of its own-brand packaging is already easily recycled and 16% of the plastic included in the packaging is of recycled origin. In addition, 40% of the company's fruit and vegetables no longer contain plastic in their packaging. In addition, and in terms of waste separation, they provide their customers with an information table on the packaging itself that helps with the recycling task.

REset Plastic an ambitious international strategy in more than thirty countries

REset Plastic is the ambitious international strategy that Lidl has been promoting for years in the thirty countries where the chain is present. Within this framework, the objectives of reducing the use of plastic by 30%, using at least 25% recycled plastic and guaranteeing the recyclability of all its own-brand packaging by 2025 are included.
