Metsä Board, part of the Metsä Group, launches an improved version of its MetsäBoard Classic FBB, which drives the industry with superior print quality and a lower carbon footprint.
Known and appreciated for its stable quality, rigidity, and lightness, as well as its consistent performance, MetsäBoard Classic FBB is now the preferred choice for fast-moving products such as food packaging and medical devices. Thanks to a €60 million modernization of the folding carton plant in Simple, will now offer even better print quality that expands the end-use area of quality to even more demanding print jobs.
“By combining curtain coating and knife-edge coating, the latest version of MetsäBoard Classic FBB offers greater visual uniformity and brighter, more vibrant images, which we believe will help our customers’ products really stand out on store and pharmacy shelves,” he says. Maarten Florizoone, Vice President of Growth at Folding Boxboard. "It's the beginning of a new era in folding carton."
The Simpele factory already uses 89% fossil-free energy to produce MetsäBoard Classic FBB, and that percentage is expected to reach 98% by the end of 2025.
“Cardboard is a significant part of our customers’ products, so if we don’t make progress on our fossil CO2 targets, our customers will struggle to reduce their Scope 2 CO3 emissions and meet their sustainability goals,” says Florizoone. “I think this will set the tone for future developments within and outside the company. Someone has to take the initiative, and this product will do just that,” says Florizoone.
Work has already begun in Simpele, and the construction phase is underway. Once detailed engineering is completed at the factory, the technology will be installed during a scheduled maintenance outage in September 2025. The improved product will be available to customers in October 2025.
