Mondelēz International y Saica Group have joined forces to launch a New paper-based product, designed for multipacks in the biscuit market. The iconic Véritable Petit Beurre cookies from LU, Along with Petit Brun Extra and LU Thé biscuits, produced at the Mondelēz International plant in La Haye-Fouassière (France), they will be on shelves in France, Belgium and the United Kingdom from July 2024.
By using this paper-based product, Mondelēz International is reducing virgin plastic by –63% per package, aiming to save -177 tonnes of virgin plastic by the end of 2024, compared to 2023, in France, Belgium and the UK. The new packaging is designed for recyclability in the paper waste stream and has been produced using FSC® certified paper and cold seal functionality. The recyclability of this paper packaging has been positively tested following the CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries) Recyclability Test Method version 2.
This new solution is manufactured on a horizontal packaging line (Horizontal Form Film Sealing). It guarantees high print quality, optimal functionality and ease of use of in-line packaging machines. A notable feature of this development is that paper flow packs can be produced at the same speed and throughput as before. This has been made possible thanks to the close collaboration between Mondelēz International, Saica and the packaging machinery manufacturer who developed modifications to achieve this performance using the selected paper and cold sealing.
These efforts support Mondelēz International’s long-term “Vision 2030” growth strategy, which includes sustainability as a key pillar. In 2024, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated Mondelēz International’s short-term greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2030 and its net-zero emissions goal for 2050, reinforcing the company’s commitment to more sustainable consumption.
Mondelēz International is committed to continuously improving its packaging to support a more circular economy. This is based on a three-part approach that focuses on using packaging that is both lightweight and suitable: reducing packaging, evolving packaging and improving systems. As part of this journey, the company has set some ambitious goals:
- Approximately 98% or more of its packaging will be designed to be recyclable by 2025.
- -5% reduction in virgin plastic by 2025.
- -25% reduction in rigid virgin plastic by 2025.
In line with Mondelēz International’s commitments to sustainability, the Saica Group is also committed to the transition towards a circular economy. To achieve this, Saica has set itself a number of ambitious goals in areas such as resource efficiency, material circularity, climate neutrality and zero landfill. Specifically, the flexible packaging business division has committed to:
- Offer solutions designed for recycling in 100% of its product portfolio by 2025.
- Develop the incorporation of 5% of the weight of recycled materials in its products.
- Reduce the plastic content of its products by 20% by 2025.
- Have 15% of the total weight of packaging manufactured for its customers made of paper by 2025.
“Guided by our values and our goal to reduce our environmental impact, our research and development teams have been working for years to create a unique paper structure for secondary packaging.”, said Olivier Kintzig, Director of Biscuit Packaging in Europe at Mondelēz International.
“We are here to improve the sustainability and recyclability of every product. We can all be game changers, and our goal is to show people that we are here to find a solution to every problem and support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals.”, said Marine Stochmil, Product and Application Development Engineer at Saica Flex in Luxembourg.
