SLEEVER® and CARBIOS launch the world's first biodegradable security seal for Home Compost: SEELCAP® ONEGO

30th September 2024

SLEEVER® and CARBIOS

SLEEVER® and CARBIOS They present the first innovation arising from their association: SEELCAP® ONEGO, The first Biodegradable Security Seal for Home Compost in the world (pending “OK Compost HOME” certification from TÜV Austria for SEELCAP® ONEGO).

The nature of this double innovation lies in the integration of the CARBIOS Active encapsulated enzyme, CARBIOS' biodegradation solution for PLA, into the biopolymer blend, and in its eco-design concept developed with Fabrice Peltier. SEELCAP® ONEGO is an original and patented security seal concept that consists of two distinct but inseparable objectives: the first, to guarantee security against manipulation and the second, to allow easy opening in a single gesture using a grip flap.

Thanks to the inclusion of CARBIOS Active in the material, SEELCAP® ONEGO completely disintegrates under compostable conditions, even at room temperature, in less than 6 months (TÜV Austria “OK Compost HOME” certification for SEELCAP® ONEGO is pending). SEELCAP® ONEGO thus reduces the carbon footprint by up to 70% compared to conventional shrink capsules and significantly improves the circularity of this type of packaging. SEELCAP® ONEGO is easily integrated into existing filling lines and is compatible with SLEEVER® Group’s Combishrink® and Combiskinner® shrink wrapping equipment, with outputs ranging from 60 to 24.000 bottles per hour.

The SEELCAP® ONEGO innovation will be presented on the SLEEVER and CARBIOS stands at LuxePack Monaco, which is taking place at the Grimaldi Forum until 2 October 2024.

SEELCAP® ONEGO: The first biodegradable Home Compost seal concept
The sealing function is necessary to ensure the safety of packaging, in particular for glass products associated with wooden stoppers often used for wines, spirits and alcohols. Due to their small size (< 60 mm), conventional systems with security seals are not suitable for traditional packaging sorting and recycling flows, hence the need for a new alternative offered by this biodegradable Home Compost solution.

CARBIOS Active: an innovation that allows PLA-rich applications to be composted at room temperature, thus improving their life cycle
Integrated directly into the plastic transformation process without modifying production lines, the CARBIOS Active encapsulated enzyme enables the creation of a new generation of biopolymer-based products that can be composted at room temperature, whatever the soil conditions, while guaranteeing quality compost, free of toxicity and microplastics. CARBIOS Active opens up new possibilities for the biodegradation of PLA at room temperature, even under home composting conditions. At the CARBIOS headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand (France), a production line capable of producing 2.500 tonnes/year of CARBIOS Active (required for the equivalent of 50.000 tonnes/year of enzymatic PLA) is already in operation.

Emmanuel Ladent, CARBIOS Managing Director, says: “I am delighted to introduce SEELCAP® ONEGO to the market, the first innovation resulting from our collaboration with SLEEVER. Thanks to the integration of CARBIOS Active, we have jointly developed the first security seal that can be composted at room temperature, offering a valuable alternative when recycling is not an option. This is a concrete application of CARBIOS’ mission to find innovative and sustainable solutions to rethink the life cycle of all types of plastic.”

Eric Fresnel, President of the SLEEVER® Group, says: “SEELCAP® ONEGO is a new eco-design offering for tamper-evident packaging, the result of collaboration between the SLEEVER® and CARBIOS teams, with the involvement of designer Fabrice Peltier. This groundbreaking innovation in packaging security meets the needs of the wine, spirits and alcoholic beverage markets, particularly in countries where recycling channels for glass packaging have not yet been developed.”
