The search for recycled plastics that meet food safety standards and inks that promote efficient recycling of labels are two of the main packaging challenges that the Valencian company Albert Oils, specialized in the production and sale of all types of edible oils with more than 60 years of experience, has moved the sector into the 75 Innovation Breakfast of the Packaging Innovation Cluster.

This session, which has had the support of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Generalitat Valenciana and has been held in ESIC Business & Marketing School, has been inaugurated by Angel Garrigós, your admissions director.

During breakfast, Eilyn Coello, supply chain manager Albert Oils, highlighted the evolution of the Valencian company, which has expanded both its size and its production capacity, currently reaching more than 15.000 tons per year. Also, in his speech he highlighted the advances in sustainability of the company's packaging, with a focus on recyclability and the search for more sustainable materials.

Furthermore, Alba Bellod, quality and sustainability technician at Albert Oils, told the attendees how the company seeks to reduce the impact of its labels. Along these lines, he explained that they have machinery prepared to achieve this, and that they need to increase the percentage of sustainable and recycled materials. In this sense, the company has launched the challenge to the sector to be able to efficiently adapt its packaging to regulations, reaching 25% recycled plastic in its packaging.

Entry into force of new regulations for Spanish packaging companies

This Breakfast has also included the intervention of Jose Guaita, president of the consulting firm Heura Environmental Management, which informed attendees of the entry into force at the beginning of 2025 of Royal Decree 1055/2022 on packaging and packaging waste. Product producers, that is, all companies, regardless of their type and sector, that put packaging on the market for the first time in Spain, must be attached to a SCRAP, a collective system of extended producer responsibility, or assess the viability of communicating an individual system, and both types of systems can even coexist.

Thus, Guaita has also highlighted that “The complexity of this entire horizon is marked by the misinformation that companies suffer. Additionally, we must take advantage of legal compliance to turn it into a business opportunity.".

On the other hand, he spoke about the two SCRAPS that they have developed, such as AEVAE (Reference Collective System in the Agricultural Sector) and ENVALORA (National Proposal for the Plastic, Chemical, Rubber and Construction Sector).

Training for Cluster companies

Meanwhile, in his speech, Virginia Serrón, business manager of ESIC, has informed the Cluster members of the possibility of carrying out Delivery to Italy takes one or two business days for SMEs training programs in Digital transformation valued at more than 10.000 euros per seat, financed through Next Generation funds.

Along with it, José Monfort, professor of the postgraduate area at the business school, has highlighted the most convenient programs for professionals in the sector, such as the Senior Management Sustainability Program, designed to train management profiles who want to master all the aspects involved in addressing the great transformation of sustainability in the company.

Lastly, he highlighted the expansion of ESIC throughout the Valencian Community, specifically in Gandía and Alcoy where the Higher Program in Sales Management and the Higher Program in Logistics will be taught, among others.

Driving innovation in the packaging sector

To end the day, Jesus Perez, director of Cluster, has spoken about the innovative initiatives he is carrying out. Among them, the new program stood out Packaging Intercluster, an initiative that seeks to promote new opportunities in the packaging sector along with others such as textiles, chemicals or food.

In addition, he presented to the attendees INDUREC 4.0, a project dedicated to the research and development of a new application that monitors and follows the different steps in the management of plastic packaging, from initial recycling to the various stages of transformation.
