Bacardi presents its 100% biodegradable liquor bottle

December 7th 2020

The new 100% biodegradable bottle from Bacardi

The new 100% biodegradable bottle de Bacardi, which will be on shelves in 2023, will replace 80 million plastic bottles (3.000 tons of plastic) that Bacardi currently produces under all of its brand names each year.

This is possible thanks to your close collaboration with Danielmer Scientific, a leading developer and manufacturer of products biodegradable. Petroleum-based plastics used by Bacardi will be replaced by Nodax™ PHA by Danimer Scientific, a biopolymer derived from the natural oils of plant seeds such as palm, canola and soybeans. While a normal plastic bottle takes more than 400 years to decompose, the new liquor bottle made from Nodax ™ PHA will biodegrade in a wide range of environments, including compost, soil, fresh water and sea water, and after 18 months will disappear without leaving harmful microplastics.

El Bacardi® rum it will be the first liquor to appear in the new bottle, before plant material is released to replace single-use plastic throughout Bacardi's supply chain and the company's 200 brands and labels, including gin Bombay Sapphire®, Gray Vodka Goose®, Patrón® tequila, Martini® vermouth and Dewar's® Scotch whiskey.

Thanks to the versatility of this innovative new material, Bacardi's packaging development team will also solve one of the beverage industry's plastic problems: the plastic lining of bottle closures.
