BASF, Quantafuel and Remondis cooperate in the chemical recycling of plastic waste

April 28th 2021

BASF, Quantafuel and Remondis signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly assess a cooperation in chemical recycling which includes a joint investment in a pyrolysis plant to plastic waste.

Remondis, one of the world's leading water and waste management companies, plans to supply suitable plastic waste to the plant, and BASF will use the resulting pyrolysis oil as feedstock in its integrated production centers (Verbund) as part of its project. ChemCyclingTM. Quantafuel intends to provide the technology and operate the plant. The company specializes in the pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste and the purification of the resulting pyrolysis oil; the technology is jointly developed and carried out with BASF. The location of the pyrolysis plant will be jointly evaluated.

Every year, almost 20 million metric tons of plastic waste in Europe is not recycled. By establishing chemical recycling as a complementary solution to mechanical recycling, it is possible to put more plastic waste back into the materials cycle, which would otherwise be incinerated. Pyrolysis technology can be used to process the waves of plastic waste that are not mechanically recycled, for example for technological or economic reasons. To maximize a circular economy for plastics, Participating companies will identify which of the plastic waste streams provided by Remondis could undergo chemical recycling in the future.

"BASF has set a goal of processing 250.000 metric tons of recycled raw material annually starting in 2025. In this regard, it is important to use raw material derived from plastic waste that would not have otherwise been recycled," he explains. lars kissau, Senior Vice President of Global Strategic Business Development in BASF's Petrochemicals division.
