BASF and Fabbri Group develop a certified compostable stretch film for fresh food packaging

March 4th 2020

BASF y Fabbri Group have developed a solution sustainable financing model for the stretch film used in the fresh food packaging.
Using BASF's ecovio® certified compostable, the Fabbri Group produces its High transparency elastic film Nature Fresh. Meat, fish, fruits and vegetables can be packed manually or automatically. It is also suitable as an industrial stretch film. It is the first film stretchable, compostable and certified which combines optimum breathability in order to extend the shelf life of fresh food, with high transparency and excellent mechanical properties for automatic packaging. Nature Fresh is suitable for contact with food according to the American and European regulations.
Thanks to its properties, this film helps to keep food fresh for a longer period of time when compared to other alternatives for stretch film such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene (PE). As a result, greenhouse gas emissions from food that are produced and distributed, but ultimately wasted, can be reduced. Once used, Nature Fresh can be composted together with any other food in domestic or industrial composting in accordance with national legislation, allowing organic recycling and helping to close the cycle of the food chain towards a circular economy.
Stretch film is a thin and flexible film that is used mainly for packaging, both manually and automatically. Nature Fresh film made with ecovio® is the certified compostable alternative to stretch films made with PVC and PE that have been used up to now in fresh food packaging. Its performance in general is comparable to that of films made with PVC. Furthermore, ecovio® shows better water vapor transmission than PE.
