Bezoya presents its sustainable commitment with the launch of 100% recycled plastic bottles

July 27, 2020

Paschal presents its «Bezoya Commitment», where it integrates all its initiatives, along its value chain, to take care of the environment and promote the Circular Economy. This commitment is based on 5 pillars: origin, sustainable packaging and waste 0, product, sustainable mobility and recycling.

As it stands out Javier Rivera, General Director of Beverages and Distribution at Pascual, “caring for the environment has been part of the company's DNA since its inception more than 50 years ago. The 'Bezoya Commitment' reflects our commitment not to reuse more resources but to use those we already have and consolidate ourselves as the leading water brand in the market.

The 5 Bezoya Commitments

1. Origin: caring for biodiversity
. Bezoya preserves the biodiversity around its spring located in the Sierra de Guadarrama through the Natura 2000 Network, the main European instrument in charge of conservation. Likewise, its water comes from underground aquifers. Therefore, they do not perform any mechanical extraction action and it reaches homes pure, without having contact with the outside.

2. Sustainable packaging and waste 0. The brand is committed to the sustainable construction of its plants, the use of renewable energy and works to give a second life to its waste, while promoting the local economy.

Its Ortigosa del Monte plant has the LEED Silver certification of sustainability guarantee, granted by the US Green Building Council, which assesses aspects related to energy efficiency, the use of alternative energies, and the improvement of indoor environmental quality. , the efficiency of water consumption, sustainable development and the selection of materials.

The energy consumption of the new plant is 33% lower than a reference building with the same characteristics and for the construction the use of locally sourced and recycled materials has also prevailed. In addition, 100% of the electrical energy used in its plants comes from renewable sources and has zero waste to landfill, that is, 100% of the waste generated in its plants has a second life.

Likewise, 100% of their purchases are from local Spanish suppliers.

3. Product: sustainable packaging with less impact. 330 and 500 ml bottles made 100% with recycled plastic are launched on the market. This year 2020, in addition, its 1,5-liter and 5-liter bottles will already have 50% recycled plastic and by 2022 all its bottles will be rPET.

Bezoya has been using recycled plastic since 2017. Since then it has already reused 2.437 tons, the equivalent of 100 million 1,5-liter bottles. Since 2014 it has also eliminated 10% of plastic from its packaging, saving 5.800 tons of this material; that is, 237 million 1,5-liter bottles. In the end, your goal is not to use more plastic bottles, but to reuse the ones that already exist.

They also pack part of their water in tetra brik and are working on a more sustainable brik with materials mainly from renewable sources, being the only brand that has such a wide range of packaging. In this sense, Ribera emphasizes that “our R + D + i department works daily in the proactive search for alternative and sustainable materials to be the spearhead of the sector. Because we must work today and bring the innovation of tomorrow ”.

4. Sustainable mobility. Its commercial vehicles are plug-in hybrids and 100% electric and emit half of CO2 and 10 times less nitrogen oxides and particles than an average vehicle in Spain. The renewal of its long-distance logistics has meant a 12% reduction in emissions of Particles and Nitrogen Oxides. Its short-term goal is for 70% of goods to be moved in sustainable trucks.

5. Recycling. Their bottles are 100% recyclable in the yellow container. And, thanks to recycling, last year they reused 84 million 1,5-liter bottles, that is, 2.065 tons of plastic. In 2020, its goal is to return 187 million 1,5-liter bottles to the cycle, that is, to stop using 4.600 tons of plastic. In 2022 all the plastic used in its bottles will be recycled.
