Borealis and Trexel, a leading expert in foam injection and blow molded parts, have jointly developed a new plastic bottle based on a portfolio grade Bornewables™ Polyolefins made with renewable raw materials 100% derived from waste and residue streams. The lightweight bottle, which will be on display at the Borealis stand at K 2022 in October (Hall 6, Stand A43), is reusable and fully recyclable. It has a significantly lower overall CO2 footprint because it is made from raw materials from renewable sources and is produced in the foaming process.
The Bornewables™ portfolio of circular polyolefins helps reduce carbon footprint while offering material performance equal to that of virgin polymers. The use of Bornewables grades allows design freedom and color flexibility, and helps maintain a premium look and feel. The grades, which are commercially available in Europe, help conserve natural resources because derived solely from waste and residue streams, for example, from used cooking oil. Reusing waste that is already in circulation instead of fossil fuel-based raw materials improves the sustainability of applications made with Bornewables grades.
The new reusable bottle developed by Borealis and Trexel retains its value over many life cycles by using Trexel's patented technology in conjunction with Bornewables grades; As a material solution, the new bottle minimizes the use of valuable raw materials. In addition, the converters consume less energy in the production process when using MuCell® technology. Therefore, the bottle helps to close the circle of circularity of plastics by designing for recycling, using renewable raw materials, and material performance over multiple life cycles.
