With the aim of providing a space for strategic reflection, the Container and Packaging Cluster has organized CEO CONNECTION, a space for CEOs of companies in the packaging sector. In this first edition, the expert Anselmo Rios Signature Redflexión Consultants has offered the presentation 'Future and Strategy: Leading in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The CEOs addressed a variety of key topics that directly impact the future of the packaging industry, from marketplace platforms and dropshipping to artificial intelligence, 5G and blockchain technologies, autonomous vehicles, the metaverse, robotics and automation, big data, 3D printing, logistics hubs, and sustainability. These trends have the potential to transform the way packaging companies operate, from cost optimization to creating new business models and adapting to consumer demands.
Reducing costs with AI
The day began with a discussion on the impact of marketplace platforms, which are transforming logistics and distribution in the packaging industry. By using artificial intelligence to optimize costs and offer free shipping throughout Europe, these platforms are enabling companies to rethink their logistics strategies, reducing costs, increasing customization possibilities, and improving operational efficiency.
A crucial topic discussed was the metaverse, which already enables new forms of consumer interaction and product personalization. While still in its early stages, the metaverse is opening up opportunities to learn about the products of companies in the sector with a virtual factory tour, although work is underway to simplify the devices needed to make them lighter than current ones.
The advancement of autonomous vehicles, such as those used by Nuro for product distribution and already in use in several North American states, is also a topic impacting the packaging industry and demonstrates how advances in automation can optimize product distribution and make it virtually "tailor-made."
Another key topic has been the dropshipping trend, a model that has already revolutionized e-commerce and is gaining ground in physical retail. BigBuy, one of the leading companies based in Valencia, exemplifies this model.
3D printing has been another trend discussed. Spanish companies like Triditive are leading the way in the production of customized spare parts and products using this technology. As 3D printing technologies become more accessible, companies will be able to produce customized packaging more efficiently and sustainably.
The event also highlighted the importance of blockchain technology for product traceability. In a sector like packaging, where transparency and sustainability are crucial, the implementation of blockchain now allows companies to guarantee the origin and destination of their products.
Finally, the role of artificial intelligence in improving operational efficiency and in the daily work of CEOs in the packaging industry was highlighted. Ultimately, this last activity allowed executives to reflect on important aspects to help them anticipate upcoming changes and adapt their strategies to an increasingly digital and sustainable environment.
