Diageo presents Baileys in a paper bottle

May 28th 2024

Diageo Is developing paper-based packaging for Baileys, cream liqueur original irish.

In association with PA Consulting, as part of the Bottle Collective with PA and PulPac, Diageo is trialling a dry-molded fiber bottle that is 90% paper, with a thin plastic liner and an aluminum seal.

The bottle is designed to be recycled in standard paper streams and does not require the consumer to separate the plastic liner from the paper bottle when disposing of it. The test of 2.000 bottles with consumers has already been done with Baileys, in mini format (80 ml) at the Time Out Festival in Barcelona, Spain, from May 25 to 26, and it was Diageo's first test with consumers with paper bottles.

La PulPac dry molded fiber technology Not only does it save water, it is energy efficient and recyclable, and it is viable at commercial manufacturing speeds and scale. T

Diageo is exploring paper formats in its broader portfolio. The company remains a committed member of the Pulpex consortium and continues to internally develop and test its Johnnie Walker paper bottle concept, which is still in development, along with other projects.

Additionally, it is developing a spiral-wound paper bottle designed by Diageo with Don Papa, the premium Filipino rum brand. The bottle is undergoing feasibility testing and is expected to be made up of 90% paper. It is designed to remove the surrounding cardboard gift box, in line with Diageo's announcement in 2022 of a program to remove cardboard gift boxes from its premium whiskey portfolio to reduce excess packaging, which is being implementing gradually.

Diageo is also looking at other packaging formats to address its sustainability goals. Through Diageo Sustainable Solutions, it is testing the lightweighting of its glass bottles using a novel coating developed by EXXERGY. Following a successful first stage, Diageo has invested in the second round of laboratory testing and will work with supply chain partners Ardagh and Dassualt Systemes to complete it.

In March, Diageo announced the trial of 30.000 Baileys bottles in aluminum format at selected airports in Europe (Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Frankfurt), with an expected carbon reduction of 44% compared to the current glass bottle.
