The Packaging Cluster continues to grow and delivers its GoldPack awards

El Cluster of Innovation in Container and Packaging continues to grow. Specifically, during the previous year, its number of associates has increased by 24%, as explained in the General Assembly held in a special way on this occasion at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium. An appointment in which the president of the Cluster, Amaya Fernández, thanked the associated companies for their support of the organization.

Along these lines, the managing director of the Cluster, Jesús Pérez, added that the support of companies in the sector is crucial. In this sense, the challenge for this exercise is to have more than 90 associated companies in the sector.

Regarding the great achievements that have been highlighted by the director of the Cluster, there is the renewal of the accreditation as AEI (Innovative Business Group) and the high impact of the Innovation Breakfasts that are held with user companies that seek to solve their challenges. of Packaging and that have the collaboration of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Generalitat Valenciana.

Also noteworthy are the three innovation and technological development projects that the Cluster has carried out in 2023, in which 8 partners have participated, which has generated a return of almost 300.000 euros.

Goldpack Awards

As the main novelty on this occasion, the Cluster has awarded the GoldPack awards for the first time. These awards are an initiative that seeks to recognize and reward associated companies belonging to the packaging Value Chain. In this first edition, three projects have been awarded in the fields of sustainability, digitalization and internationalization.

The 'Best Circular Economy Project' has gone to the one presented by Alcion Packaging Solutions, collected by its marketing and communication manager, María José Coronado. Its innovative plasma-fluorinated barrier packaging has obtained this award. The barrier generated in the plastic container through this technology gives greater resistance to the container, going from a multi-layer structure to a monomaterial one that increases its sustainability.

On the other hand, the 'Best Digitalization Project' has gone to SACMI, an award collected by its CEO, David Gálvez. In this case, the company has obtained recognition for a project to transform the management of technical work in the company, replacing manual bulletins with digital ones that have saved thousands of hours of work, improving efficiency and reducing errors.

And finally, the 'Best Internationalization Project' has been on this occasion for Hinojosa for his extensive work in this area, received by his strategy director, Fernando Jiménez. The company continues to expand its international presence, and already has 24 production plants and more than 2900 employees distributed between Spain, France, Portugal and Italy.

Finally, a 'Business Career Recognition' has also been awarded to DS Smith Tecnicarton, a reference company in the design, manufacture and supply of high-performance packaging. Its general director, Fernando Arrufat, has collected the award. This award recognizes the company's trajectory and its continued commitment to the Cluster.

Trends in the packaging sector

During the Assembly he also intervened Adrià Llacuna, project director of ADD market, which has presented a study of the packaging sector and its main trends. These include an unstable situation due to the geopolitical scenario and the increase in energy and raw material costs, which have increased turnover across the board and reduced company margins.

He has also assured that a “structural transformation is being experienced, especially by introducing sustainability as an industry paradigm.” As notable trends at this point, he has spoken of the efficiency of manufacturing processes, the acceleration of the regulatory framework and the deepening of some consumer guidelines focused on seeking minimal environmental impact, among others.

Finally, Artificial Intelligence has also been discussed in the Assembly. Jorge Reverte, Digital Transformation business manager at NUNSYS, explained that the best known now is ChatGPT, but there are also areas such as Deep Learning or Machine Learning that can be used in business to detect patterns, predict demand or maintenance. He has commented that Generative Artificial Intelligence also helps to be more efficient and productive if it is introduced into the company's processes. Finally, he detailed that, despite having limitations, technology advances rapidly and could do things in a year that are not available today.
