IRTA and UB

Nearly half a thousand experts in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) or Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) They meet in the Historic Building of the University of Barcelona (UB) between September 8 and 11 at the 14th edition of the LCA Food Conference, organized by the Institute of Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA) and the Food Campus of the University of Barcelona (UB). Internationally renowned speakers will discuss the future of food systems, how to create healthy and at the same time sustainable diets for the entire population, and the footprint of cultivated meat.

From the moment a food is first produced until it becomes waste or is reused, energy, materials and water are needed, generating various types of emissions. All of this makes up the environmental footprint of the food. Quantifying it accurately requires a lot of calculations and agreeing on the criteria used. Only in this way will it be possible to compare foods with each other, which is key in the current context of the climate crisis and in view of the prospect of an increase in the world population. LCA is a powerful tool for calculating the environmental footprint that takes into account the entire life cycle of food.

The official opening of the congress takes place this morning, with the attendance of the Deputy Director General of Herbaceous and Industrial Crops and Olive Oil of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Peace Fronts; from the Vice-Rector for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transfer of the UB, Mercè Segarra; from the person responsible for Technical Advice of the General Subdirectorate of Agro-Food Industries and Quality of the General Directorate of Agro-Food Companies, Quality and Gastronomy of the DARP, Anna Castellví Mendez; from the head of the Catalan Office for Climate Change, Leo Bejarano, and the general director of IRTA, Josep Usall.
