With ten awards in the WorldStar Awards 2025, the most important packaging competition in the world, Spain is once again among the top ten countries with the most awards in this competition, which has awarded a total of 260 works from 35 countries.
The 2025 edition has marked a milestone in the history of this competition organized by the World Packaging Organization (WPO) reaching a record of participation. A total of 550 applications were submitted from 40 countries, which had previously been awarded in national or continental competitions recognized by the WPO, which, in the case of Spain, are the Liderpack Awards organized Graphispack Association and the living room Hispack from Fira de Barcelonaa.
The country that has received the most WorldStar awards has been Japan (23), followed by Germany and Austria (both with 22 each), India (19), Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) –which have presented themselves jointly– (18), Turkey (17), China (15), Brazil (14) and South Korea (11). Spanish packaging, with 10 trophies, occupies ninth place in the ranking of distinctions, tied with that of the United States. The top ten of the classification is closed by the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The Secretary General of the Graphispack Association, Ignasi Cusi, He said: “It is a source of pride to see how the Spanish packaging industry presents such innovative solutions year after year that place us among the top ten countries in the world in this international competition. These are proposals that not only respond to market demands, but also contribute to sustainability and improved efficiency in logistics processes.”
For his part, the director of Hispack, Xavier Pascual, Pascual congratulated the Spanish winners “for their effort and capacity for innovation, which have placed our country at the forefront of global packaging.” Pascual recalled that “Spanish companies can take advantage of Liderpack to access this prestigious international competition in order to show the world their commitment to sustainability and their commitment to innovative solutions that make a difference in the packaging industry.”
Spanish winners
The Spanish solutions awarded in this edition of the WorldStar are linked to the categories of food, fruit and vegetables, alcoholic beverages, luxury packaging, logistics and packaging materials and components. In general, these are works that stand out for their design, innovation and, especially, for their sustainable approach.
With two trophies, the Madrid company to veil has been the great Spanish winner for two showy sleeves for drinksThe first, “Olé on Ice”, printed with thermochromic inks with a rough and shiny finish, dresses the bottle of a sparkling wine that should be consumed very cold. For this reason, it includes motifs that change color to warn that the temperature is below 8ºC. The second, for “Licor 43”, stands out for its high-definition printing and embossed details that simulate ceramic, providing a handcrafted and, at the same time, luxurious appearance thanks to the golden touches included in the bottle of this spirit.
In the food category, the Alicante company has emerged as the winner ITC-Packaging for its airtight container for Carmencita paprika, recyclable and more sustainable, with a double-opening lid, and Alzamora Group for the 5J Pura Genialidad premium packaging set for hams and loins, consisting of an elegant and functional vertical case, a stable display and personalized envelopes made entirely of recyclable cardboard.
In the specialty of packaging for fruits and vegetables, Smurfit Westrock was awarded for its Safe&Green trays, recyclable and ventilated, which prolong the freshness of the fruit. The Murcian firm flexomed also won a WorldStar for ENBOX LongLiFe, a tomato tray with an ethylene-absorbing film that extends its shelf life up to 12 days longer than conventional packaging and improves its quality.
In the field of packaging for logistics, DS Smith Tecnicarton was awarded for innovative corrugated cardboard trays for automotive headlights, 100% recyclable and biodegradable, which protect products and can replace plastic packaging in an emergency. J2 Served was awarded for the Niupack Side solution, a recycled cardboard separator that prevents the movement of goods on pallets, optimising logistics and reducing costs and loading time thanks to its foldable and compact design.
Finally, the Spanish winners in the packaging materials and components category were Miguel Anton Malo for its Rotating Carafe, an innovative recyclable monomaterial container that facilitates the storage and controlled pouring of liquids, especially accessible for people with motor difficulties, and Iberian Cartonplastfor its plastic pallet for the glass sector, made with up to 70% recycled material, light, resistant and 100% recyclable, which improves the efficiency of transporting glass products and contributes to sustainability.
The WorldStar 2025 Awards ceremony will take place on 30 May 2025 in Milan, Italy, at the IPACK-IMA trade fair. The winners in the special categories “best sustainable packaging”; “best packaging to prevent food waste”; “best marketing in packaging”; and the President of the Jury Award will be announced at the same ceremony.
