Food 4 Future drives innovation with foodtech startups

June 9th, 2021

FoodTech Expo 2021, The innovation event organized by AZTI and Nebext that will bring together the food and beverage industry from June 15 to 17 at the Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC), will put in contact leading companies in the sector with startups that are developing solutions and projects of innovation that will drive the revolution in the sector and give rise to new production models.

The congress will feature the Food Tech Startup Forum, where more than 2.000 startups from around the world have presented their candidacies to show the solutions that are transforming the food industry in segments such as meat, fish, dairy, oil industry, agriculture, cereals, canned goods, and beverages

Among the 20 finalist proposals is alacarte, a startup that has developed an automated device that reduces the alcoholic content, and the calories, of any bottle of wine or liquor while preserving its original essence. It allows consumers to choose the percentage of alcohol to reduce just before consumption and is capable of reducing 80% alcohol by volume in just 5 minutes, in addition to eliminating sulfites.

Healthy eating is one of the strategic lines that will be addressed in Food 4 Future. The startup omics has created a solution that combines science (nutrition, nutrigenomics, omics science) and algorithms based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The company has analyzed and integrated into the same system thousands of articles on health and nutrition, comparing the data with other articles related to omics sciences, especially in the field of nutrigenomics. The information collected has been mathematically processed to design a complex algorithm, which is behind the decision support system (DSS). From this information, they design a system that provides highly personalized dietary advice.

The production of new foods is the core business of cocus, a startup that develops industrial solutions for the production of animal proteins of plant or cellular or cellular origin (mimetic foods) using 2D / 3D laser printing, bioprinting and robotics. The company has created Mimethica, the first foodtech platform that incorporates multiple technologies (laser, 3D, inkjet =…) and its own ingredients (biotinks) for the formulation of new foods.

Along the same lines, the stratup Biotech Foods is specialized in the industrial production of alternative animal proteins. This company produces highly nutritious, healthy and safe meat, which is grown in a controlled environment using cell culture technology, which makes breeding and feeding animals unnecessary and counteracts the lack of sustainability of industrial livestock. .

Another of the finalist startups defends the robotization and automation of processes as the main strategy in which to establish business models and create new production models. MyFood is a company that specializes in the sale of robots that automate kitchen processes in restaurants, being able to cook and carry out all the steps of the food preparation process. In Spain there are already more than 30 restaurants that use their services and they hope to reach 50 restaurants by the end of 2021.

The startup BioTip has created a label to more accurately control the expiration date of food. His solution provides a precise and continuous measure of freshness for each container. The concept is simple: the label includes a small bag that contains a sample of the product and biochemicals that, through a chemical reaction, indicate the state of freshness through the color change of the adhesives.

The FoodTech World Map establishes a foodtech ecosystem that facilitates contact between startups and partners and investors, government agencies, clusters, associations, universities, technology centers, incubators and accelerators. Launched last May, it already has more than 2.000 startups from all over the world.
