Hinojosa has presented the modernization project of its Hinojosa Paper Alquería paper mill, located in L'Alqueria d'Asnar (Alicante). The event, held on June 29, was presided over by Juanfran Pérez Llorca, President of the Valencian Generalitat, accompanied by Marian Cano García, Minister of Industry, Tourism, Innovation and Trade, y Rubén Martínez Hinojosa, president of the company.
With a history of nearly 80 years linked to the region and an investment of more than 36 million euros, Hinojosa is making a strategic commitment to decarbonization, waste valorization and the strengthening of the social fabric.
On an operational level, the initiative has allowed the plant to increase its production capacity by around 20%, reaching 128.000 tons of recycled paper annually. In this way, Hinojosa demonstrates that it is possible to increase production while minimizing environmental impact and generating real value for the region.
Advances in sustainability and efficiency
One of the project's main pillars is improving the environmental performance of the production process through a pioneering waste-to-energy solution. This system allows the company to transform its own process waste into energy for self-consumption and advance its decarbonization roadmap.
Prior to this phase, Hinojosa employs a model designed to minimize waste generation and maximize the recovery of raw materials, especially fiber, for reintroduction into the paper manufacturing process. Thus, only materials that cannot be recovered are used for energy production within the plant itself, avoiding their transport to external facilities for processing and reducing associated indirect emissions.
This action reinforces an industrial model based on the reduction, recovery and use of resources, aligned with the best available technologies and with the new European framework on packaging and packaging waste, aimed at promoting circularity and reducing the environmental impact of the sector.
Thanks to these advancements, the plant will achieve a 28% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, resource optimization has allowed for increased production capacity without increasing water consumption, consolidating an efficient industrial growth model that respects natural capital.
The action has had the support of the Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure, Territory and Recovery, and with the corresponding Integrated Environmental Authorization (AAI), which certifies its compliance with the applicable environmental framework and reinforces the guarantees of the project.
This investment has been financed through two PERTE grants—awarded under the Circular Economy and Decarbonization calls for proposals—and a Green Loan. This loan is linked to actions with a positive environmental impact, such as emissions reduction, waste valorization, and fiber recovery, thus reinforcing Hinojosa's commitment to sustainability.
