Huhtamaki

Huhtamaki, a global provider of sustainable packaging solutions and Synthegon, a German provider of processing and packaging technology, announce an innovation for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. Huhtamaki launches Push Tab® paper, a blister solution based on sustainable renewable paper, the first FSC ™ certified paper-based tablet container designed to meet the strict safety requirements of the pharmaceutical packaging regulated. It provides customers with a more sustainable alternative to traditional packaging made of thermoformed PVC and aluminum and also helps reduce environmental impact throughout the value chain.

Push Tab® paper tablet containers have more than 75% paper-based material sourced from FSC ™ certified suppliers in Europe. Combining it with advanced barrier coating technology, Huhtamaki achieves that sustainable paper packaging can be sealed without compromising safety, functionality or protective properties compared to traditional mono PVC (polyvinyl chloride) blisters. A special mechanical treatment allows consumers to push the tablet easily without damaging the product inside. The material is further processed and formed with Syntegon's unique paper molding technology and machinery.

"We are proud to introduce a new, more sustainable packaging solution for tablets for the healthcare sector that has high growth potential," he says. fabio diedone, Huhtamaki's director of flexible packaging sales. European sales of flexible packaging in the pharmaceuticals category were estimated at € 1.100 billion in 2020, of which approximately 80% are in blister packaging. We are happy to help our customers respond to opportunities with Push Tab® paper, designed for circularity, which presents the first sustainable alternative for this type of packaging.

The German Packaging Institute recognized Push Tab® paper with the 2021 German Packaging Award for sustainability on July 27, 2021. This recognition affirms the value of Huhtamaki and Syntegon's commitment to innovative and sustainable packaging concepts.
