El Itene technology center has developed delamination and depolymerization processes to improve the recovery of multilayer packaging waste with high performance and has achieved transform those waste from multilayer PET/PE trays (polyethylene terephthalate/polyethylene) in a compostable plastic through the use of microorganisms.

These results have been the result of Valquibio R&D project, which has been supported by Ivace through the Feder funds and has been carried out between July 2021 and June 2022. The objective of this project has been the development of advanced chemical and biotechnological recycling processes for the recovery of non-recyclable packaging for transformation into biodegradable and compostable materials.

This project has had the collaboration of waste management companies Tetma, from the Symmetry Group, and Acteco, who have provided material and have contributed with their knowledge to make the processes effectively applicable to the industrial sector.
