Central Lechera Asturiana's packaging, the first with SIG's U-shaped paper straw

May 19th 2021

Capsa Food has released its whole milk Asturian Lechera Central with the new SIG paper U-straw across cardboard packaging 200 ml combiblocSmall, already available in Spanish supermarkets.

The paper used to produce the SIG paper straws has the FSC certification®. The straw wrapper has also been redesigned to stay attached to the packaging to ensure it is thrown away, and disposed of with the carton.

John PovedanoCapsa Food Marketing Director, says: “Our collaboration with SIG has enabled us to be prepared to implement this important change in EU legislation. We are proud to be the first to use the new U-shaped paper straw and the environmental benefits this will bring by reinforcing our commitment to holistic sustainability in everything we do. It also responds to the growing demand from our consumers for more sustainable packaging solutions. "

The new U-shaped paper straw for aseptic packaging is another important milestone in SIG's Way Beyond Good of contributing more to society and the environment than you take from them.

Ana Ruiz del Arbol, Iberia marketing director at SIG, affirms that “cardboard packaging is sustainable by nature, since it is made up of 70-80% cardboard. Now with the introduction of our new aseptic carton paper straw, we continue to lead the way in the industry. Our close collaboration with Capsa Food has ensured they are now prepared to meet the requirements of the SUP directive; with renewable and recyclable innovation, in addition to offering its consumers a sustainable alternative to plastic straws. »

As a result of EU waste legislation and growing concern about the environmental impact of plastic straws, sustainable alternatives are becoming more important. According to European Union SUP (Single Use Plastic) directive, plastic straws in Europe must be replaced before July 2021.
