Metsä Board has partnered with Finnish candy maker kouvolan lakritsi to create a new Resealable cup made of fresh fiber cardboard.

Inspired by paper cups, Metsä Board's packaging design team developed the new paper cup with a heat-sealed transparent plastic film that keeps the drink fresh. licorice. Once opened, the resealable cardboard cover effectively preserves the licorice.

The result is a durable, recyclable packaging that keeps Kouvolan Lakritsi’s famous liquorice fresh while making a strong visual impression on store shelves. The new packaging also addresses common consumer complaints about traditional plastic candy bags, such as easy tearing and stickiness, while reducing plastic usage.

“We have been thinking for a long time whether the liquorice packaging could be something other than a plastic bag,” he says. Timo Nisula, CEO of Kouvolan Lakritsi. “The new cup can even be reused as a coffee cup, which adds a slight licorice flavor to the coffee.”

“Collaborating with our customers is vital to developing cardboard innovations that meet their specific needs,” he says. Ilkka Harju, director of packaging services at Metsä Board. “Working closely with Kouvolan Lakritsi, we designed a new board solution that aligns with the company’s well-known brand and offers a functional and innovative design.”

Kouvolan Lakritsi, a renowned Finnish brand founded in 1906, has been producing its liquorice using the same recipe since 1960. The cup was made by Kruunukartonki in Finland.
