NewPack, Ctic Cita's new initiative to reduce the environmental impact of plastic packaging

NewPack proposes a sustainable and innovative technology to manufacture two new biodegradable and bio-based polymeric materials for food packaging, from agri-food waste, such as potato skin or crab shell. The materials will have improved mechanical properties, making them strong competitors to traditionally used plastics. In addition, it will be provided with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in order to extend the useful life of packaged foods, while preserving their nutritional value and texture; an improvement over existing biological plastics.

The project is an action funded by the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking initiative, within the framework of the Horizon 2020 program, which aims to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) in the field of biotechnology, and has With the participation of Ctic Cita and two Spanish food companies, equally aware of the environment, Riberebro Integral SA (Spain), Argal Alimentación (Spain).

Ultimately, its main objective is to expand, validate, demonstrate and prepare the market for these innovative biological food packaging materials, an action in which Ctic Cita will play a key role.
