Nua Cosmetics and ITC Packaging launch a bio-based and compostable bottle

4th October 2024

Biobased and compostable bottle

The new bottle made of PLA It has been developed for Global Provei thanks to the joint work of Nua Cosmetics, ITC Packaging and ADBioplastics.

The project started when Global Provei, through its brand Biositive, posed the challenge of developing not only a compostable bottle, but also an eco-friendly baby shower gel that met the highest quality standards for babies' sensitive skin and was compatible with this type of packaging. Provei Global was looking for a solution that combined the highest quality with sustainable packaging, in line with its ecological principles. Nua Cosmetics took up this challenge and selected ITC-Packaging for its experience in sustainable packaging solutions, as well as ADBioplastics, for its expertise in the formulation of biodegradable materials.

“At Provei Global, with Biositivo, we are committed to creating products that are fully integrated into the natural cycle, without generating waste. It is a pleasure to have partners such as Nua Cosmetics, ITC Packaging and ADBioplastics, who share our vision and have helped us develop a product that not only takes care of the little ones, but also the planet,” she says. Sébastien Favier, CEO of Provei Global.

From a technical point of view, the challenge was considerable. The result is a 500ml bottle with a dosing cap made of biobased materials Second generation. This material improves transparency and the barrier to both oxygen and water vapour, and also improves toughness and impact resistance. The formulation of the material made it possible to develop a bottle that is not only environmentally friendly, but also promotes organic recycling, contributing to the circularity of materials and waste reduction.

In the words of Carlos Soto, CEO of Nua Cosmetics: “This project has been an exciting technical challenge. Achieving a baby gel formula of the highest quality, which is also compatible with compostable packaging, reinforces our commitment to sustainability and the well-being of children.”

Xavier Serrano, director of the PET Business Unit at ITC Packaging, adds: “We help our clients in the development process of their packaging to improve its sustainability and carbon footprint. With this project we have added a Bio and Compostable line to our portfolio of packaging solutions, which joins the rest of the sustainable solutions developed to date (rPET food and non-food).”

Following the launch of this bottle and in line with what was learned in the project, ITC has incorporated a new line of packaging called Bio2Bio, which complies with EN13432 regulations, certifying that the packaging is suitable for being transformed into compost within a period of three months after undergoing an industrial composting process. This new line of packaging is integrated with the rest of the sustainable packaging solutions included in the company's strategy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink.
