Papresa expands its business into the packaging paper sector

April 19th 2021

papresa, South European supplier of newsprint, launches its investment plan during 2021 to implement its new strategic plan, which involves betting on the production of paper for the packaging segment. To this end, the construction of a new OCC plant, the conversion of PM5 - by the German company Voith - for the production of wrapping paper and also building a plant with anaerobic water treatment technology, integrated into the factory, which will generate reusable bio-gas as fuel for the steam production boilers used for the production of paper. The expectation is that the strategic plan will be fully implemented during the first quarter of 2022.

“This transformation responds to the decrease in demand in the market for parapress paper and to the sustained growth that the packaging paper sector has been experiencing, which is growing at a rate of 9-10% per year thanks to the enormous impulse of electronic commerce. The pandemic situation is further accelerating demand that is skyrocketing, generating good prospects for results after investment. On the other hand, we will continue to be the main southern European supplier of newsprint, "he explains. Miguel Sánchez, Chairman and CEO of the historic paper mill which, in October 2020, was acquired by the German industrial investment fund Quantum Capital Partners (QCP). "Our forecast is to increase our turnover by around 30%," he adds.

The investment plan is part of one more step of a traditionally very sensitive to the environment, sustainability and the environment. apresa continues to be integrated into the urban area of its population, something possible thanks to the care it takes with everything that may generate an impact in terms of acoustic, odor, visual and / or environmental issues. In addition, the paper mill will continue to produce paper using 100% recycled fiber as raw material, contributing to the circular economy and the sustainable use of resources.

The German company Voith will completely convert the PM 5 machine from the Renteria factory to adapt it to the production of wrapping paper.

"After the conversion of PM 5, we will be able to produce light packaging papers in an optimal and efficient way with a capacity close to 200.000 tons per year", explains the CEO of Papresa, who adds that "the production of newsprint will remain in the PM6, one of the most modern newsprint paper facilities in Europe ”.

New Image

In addition to the planned investments, Papresa renews its brand image and changes its corporate identity, eliminating the presence of the mythical elephant in its logo and transforming it into a more modern and fresh image of the company, a symbol of the change that is taking place.

Papresa was born in 1896 as the Basque-Belgian Trash in errenteriA and it was established, already in 1901, as Papelera Española SA, a company that brings together several factories, including that of Errenteria. The factory specialized in the newsprint segment. In October 1993 the brand Papresa SA was born, after its separation from Papelera Española. In 2007, the Alfonso Gallardo Group bought all the shares of the company and, seven years later, it is acquired by the American fund KKR. Finally, in October 2020, the German industrial investment fund QCP acquired Papresa.
