Response of the logistics chain to the challenges of COVID-19

March 23th 2020

In the last week, given the situation created by the COVID-19, all the Spanish logistics chain is mobilizing its technical and human resources to guarantee the supply of essential products throughout the country, a fact that AECOC wants to put in the foreground.

AECOC encourages companies to maintain cooperation and reminds the different actors involved of the need to facilitate operations and the day-to-day life of all workers in the sector, such as operators, shippers and carriers, among others.

"Transport plays a fundamental role in responding to the demands of a time as complex and unexpected as the current one, for which we appreciate the commitment and excellence with which the transport chain is responding," said the General Director of AECOC, José María Bonmatí, who also thanked the carriers "for the extra effort they are making to get all the essential products to the points of sale".

To contribute to the creation of adequate working conditions in this exceptional situation, the AECOC Logistics and Transport area has developed an action protocol for the activities of the sector, which aims to prevent the spread of the virus between staff and warehouse workers and logistics centers, as well as between drivers who provide freight transport services for other companies.

The document includes, among others, preventive measures against COVID-19 for both warehouse and logistics center operators and carriers and drivers, including:
Maintain the basic preventive measures that apply to the general population
Compulsory use of the PPE provided by the companies and, specifically, those related to personal asepsis, such as disinfectant gel
Send the security and prevention protocols of the center electronically, prior to the arrival of the carriers at the facilities
· In loading and unloading operations, have the means to carry them out as quickly as possible. It is recommended to delimit an area of action when it is the carrier who loads or unloads the truck, and always maintain a minimum interpersonal distance of 1 meter with the driver or carrier
Apply disinfectant products after each use of machinery or equipment of the center that can be used by different people
Avoid physical contact in the delivery and receipt of delivery notes and promote the electronic exchange of these documents
Limit access to areas other than the warehouse or work area as much as possible unless strictly necessary
· Remain in the cabin of the vehicle for as long as possible during the stay at the facilities, except in loading or unloading operations or to access the toilets and food services of these establishments.
