Second Skin Case, Ruinart's sustainable innovation

In 2020, Ruinart breaks with the tradition of individual gift boxes and drives its global environmental approach with Second Skin Case. This eco packaging eco-friendly design is a fully recyclable compound wood fibers 100% natural.

A direct homage to the Crayères, the minimalist paper box features a silky yet textured surface that evokes the Maison's historic cellars in Reims. The Second Skin Case design is inspired by the way maîtres d'hôtels wrap champagne bottles in a white serving napkin.

It is the result of two years of dialogue between the Maison Ruinart teams and their manufacturing partners, pusterla 1880 y James cropper. In total, it took seven prototypes to come up with this pulped paper box, which answers two technical challenges.

The first challenge was to make the box impervious to any light that could alter the wine, especially with clear glass bottles. A new technique was developed to enrich the cellulose mixture with a natural metal oxide, which reinforced the opacity by adding a protective layer.

The second challenge was to ensure that the new eco-packaging could protect the wine up to the moment of tasting, while being resistant to service uses (including contact with water) without deteriorating. Adapted to refrigerated storage, the second skin case even maintains its integrity for several hours when stored in an ice bucket.

Second Skin Case is molded to the contours of the bottle in three dimensions, hugging its curves. Its absence of edges and sophisticated aesthetics is obtained through high pressure waterjet cutting. Printed with the Maison's monogram, the paper closure system is both discreet and intuitive.
