Sidel has collaborated in the development of the new Spiral bottle in PET of The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC), contributing its 40 years of experience in PET packaging to successfully renew the Fanta brand and overcome the challenges of the project.
Coca-Cola began designing and developing a new patented design for Fanta, applicable to PET and glass bottles, in order to offer the brand a new protected standard worldwide. Sidel has played a fundamental role in the development of the packaging project, specifically adapting the new Fanta bottle for industrial production.
The new creative and outstanding bottle made in PET and designed by Drink Works represents an innovation in bottle design for carbonated beverages. It has a spiral shape, since it is inspired by the gesture that is made when squeezing an orange. It is based on a series of striations decorated with small bubbles, and includes a curvature at the bottom. This spiral provides the Fanta bottle with a rare asymmetric structure that posed a challenge in developing a package that could overcome deformation and stability problems.
The Spiral bottle had to undergo comprehensive design testing and improvements, conducted through more than 60 iterations of technical drawings and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate its performance using computer studies. In addition, it was necessary to produce 15 pilot molds and carry out feasibility tests, successfully carried out by Sidel, to achieve validation of the final bottle design.
A similarly shaped bottle has been applied to the entire Fanta family of bottles and is now available in 500ml, 1L, 1,5L and 2L formats. In the 1,5 and 2 liter bottles, the Spiral design offers a better grip and a better experience for the consumer when it comes to serving the drink. To build on the successful collaboration with Sidel, an alternative 500ml Spiral bottle has been developed to ensure stability on gravity fed sloped shelves commonly found in cold chain distribution.
