At the Awards ceremony WorldStar Global Packaging Awards In Milan, on May 30, two Spanish companies received silver and bronze awards in the categories of “Packaging that saves food” and “Accessible packaging.”
Smurfit Westrock received a Silver Award in “Packaging that Saves Food” (Fresh Fruits and Vegetables category) for its innovative proposal “Safe and Green Punnets”.
This is a sustainable, 100% paper tray with a lid. Compatible with automatic forming machines, it allows for efficient ventilation to prevent ethylene buildup inside. The lid is resealable and stackable, making it easy to reuse and store. It is compatible with Smurfit surface treatments, such as moisture-repellent and ethylene-absorbing, which help delay product ripening.
Miguel Antón was awarded a Bronze Award in “Accessible Packaging” (category Packaging Materials and Components) for his project “Spin Jug”.
The Rotating Jug is composed of two key parts: the jug itself and a curved base with an optimized friction surface. By gently rotating the jug on its base, the liquid flows smoothly and with control, eliminating the effort of lifting and handling heavy containers. The smooth rotation on a curved base allows for a constant and controlled flow, improving accuracy and preventing spills. It has been designed with all users in mind, including those with reduced mobility or physical limitations. Thus, liquids can be dispensed without physical effort or complex motor skills. Technically, the container has been developed as a single-material solution, facilitating recycling. Furthermore, the versatility of the gliding base allows it to be manufactured in a range of alternative materials. With the introduction of a highly textured, low-friction base, the inherent sliding and structural properties of the materials are leveraged.

The gala brought together professionals, companies, and organizations from around the world for an evening that highlighted excellence and innovation in the field of packaging.
The atmosphere was festive and professional, with a clear focus on the future of the sector. The Spanish presence was particularly significant, with several award-winning projects reflecting the high level of competitiveness and innovation of the country's companies.
