Tetra Pak presents the first cardboard packaging for canned tuna

Tetra pak, In collaboration with Jealsa, A leading Spanish company in the manufacture and distribution of canned fish and seafood presents its first cardboard container for canned tuna of the industry. This innovative solution, packaged in Tetra Recart format, was launched last month in Sweden in partnership with the distributor axfood, in its 200ml Mini version, and will be available to food producers and brands worldwide.

Compared to conventional cans, Tetra Recart It offers a differentiated paper-based alternative, providing brands with a paper-based packaging solution that combines scalability and competitiveness. Currently, it is compatible with a wide variety of canned products, from pâtés to chunk tuna. The plan is to continue expanding its applications to adapt to the evolution of the category and new market needs.

Tetra Recart has the lowest carbon footprint in its category: 85% lower than steel cans and 83% lower than glass jars[2]. On a large scale, this represents a reduction of up to 21.000 tons of CO₂ for every million packages replaced. Furthermore, it is made with up to 71% FSC-certified paper, sourced from responsibly managed forests and renewable resources.

Its large, flat surfaces offer greater opportunities for brand building and consumer communication, while its compact format optimizes available space and increases the amount of product displayed. Its durability and rectangular design also contribute to logistical efficiency, both in storage and order fulfillment.

Jealsa will market different product categories in Tetra Recart format, both under its own brands (Rianxeira, Mare Aperto and Robinson Crusoe) and for third parties.
