TheCircularLab launches the Future Packaging Observatory

3th October 2018

The innovation center of Ecoembes presents the Future Packaging Observatory, whose main objective is to investigate how to reduce the environmental footprint of the containers.
This initiative was announced last week in a conference on packaging sustainable and bioplastics, celebrated in TheCircularLab, the Ecoembes innovation center, in the presence of more than 40 representatives of the main companies and technology centers in the country.
Attendees were able to learn what the Future Packaging Observatory consists of and how to make use of this platform, which collects the information published worldwide on the world of packaging and that Ecoembes offers free of charge. Likewise, the latest trends in the sector were announced, ranging from the use of edible containers in sports drinks to the replacement of the plastic rings that incorporate the beverage can packs with adhesives.
The second part of the day focused on a round table on the challenges posed by the use of plastics from renewable sources (such as potato starch or corn) to manufacture packaging, as well as compostable packaging. This debate, moderated by Sergio Torres-Giner, IATA-CSIC researcher and associate professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, was attended by Jordi Simón, BASF's business director; Maribí Portal, Director of Regional Technical Service and Application Development Specialist in Futamura; Domingo Font, Director of Biopolymers and Specialties R&D at Ercros, and Jorge Serrano, Business and Ecodesign Manager at Ecoembes.
TheCircularLab is a pioneering project in Europe in the field of circular economy that was born with the vocation to bring together all the proposals that seek to promote the best lines of innovation in the field of packaging and its subsequent recycling. Based in La Rioja, it is the only laboratory focused on this matter.
