January 4, 2021

The use of masks during the pandemic it has rightly grown to hundreds of millions worldwide. However, they can easily end up littering public places or natural surroundings. Metsä Board, European producer of cardboard of premium fresh fiber and part of the Metsä Group, partnered with the packaging design agency futupack and the converter corrugated cardboard Capertum to make a contenedor for the specific removal of facial masks. The design of the containers paid special attention to the materials used to produce it, usability and disposability.

Futupack is a Finnish company that designs and implements sustainable packaging solutions. “We wanted the mask container to be as aesthetic as possible so that it could be easily placed in any indoor environment. The container is delivered flat and can be assembled quickly. In addition, complete assembly instructions for consumers are printed on the container. When full, the lid is easy to close and the entire container can be disposed of safely and hygienically with the incinerated waste, "he says. Jani Mäkipää, Chief Packaging Engineer at Futupack.

It was used MetsäBoard Pro WKL 160 gsm white kraftliner paper coated as a mask container top liner. Finnish corrugated board converter Capertum printed the e-flute corrugated board in screen printing. The container is light and robust thanks to the fresh fibers of the white kraftliner, and its sleek and lightweight design makes it easy to place in various indoor public spaces.

“With urbanization and a growing population, hygienic waste management solutions are becoming more and more important. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought its own challenges to waste management. We are happy to offer a solution to the dilemma of waste of masks », says Ilkka Harju, Director of Packaging Services for EMEA and APAC at Metsä Board, who worked on the design project with Futupack.
