Café Dromedario obtains the 'Commitment to Valorization' seal from the Saica Group

Dromedary Cafe

Dromedary Cafe He has obtained the seal 'From Waste to Resources: Commitment to Valorisation', from Saica Natur, a division of the Saica Group specialized in waste management and environmental services, after passing the independent verification of the German certification company TÜV SÜD. The company thus becomes the first in its sector in Spain to achieve this recognition, having sent 2023% of its waste during the months of June and November to material and energy recovery operations in 100. It is also the only Cantabrian company with the seal in force.

During the last year and in collaboration with Saica Natur, the coffee group managed more than 63.000 kg of waste. Of these, for example, 11.000 kg of paper and cardboard waste could be transformed into the equivalent of 72.000 boxes of 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard, which can be used again by the consumer. On the other hand, of the waste that could not be recycled directly, approximately 5.800 kg were energy recovered as CSR (Solid Recovered Fuel), generating 12.000 kWh of electrical energy, which is equivalent to the average annual consumption of 4 Spanish homes.

To achieve this, and to implement and maintain this circular economy model in the Café Dromedario value chain, it has become essential to design a correct separation at source of waste into its different fractions, to carry out an active search for the best destinations for each waste flow, and have the involvement and awareness of all the teams that developed the 'Zero Waste to Landfill' project.

This milestone represents another step in the #DromedarioCommitment to the environment, which in recent years has led to important changes in all areas of the company, aimed at achieving maximum sustainability and minimum environmental impact in all its activities.

A series of improvements that range from the launch of organic coffees, teas and infusions, the use of 100% compostable cups and organic sugar... to the use of renewable energy (25% of the energy consumption of its facilities comes from its own solar panels and the remaining 75% is 100% green energy), optimizing the lighting in your facilities using LED lights or adapting your vehicle fleet.

In the words of Fernando Franco, production director and project manager at Café Dromedario, “for years one of our main objectives was to minimize the impact of our waste and we have finally managed to send 100% of the waste generated to recovery operations.” “This is – he adds – an achievement that makes us very satisfied and that encourages us to continue deepening our commitment to the environment.”

Moreover, Cristina Mediavilla, director of Castilla y León, Cantabria and La Rioja at Saica Natur, highlights: “we are very satisfied with the work carried out at Café Dromedario. At Saica we want to help minimize the environmental impact of our clients, promoting the goal of 'Zero Waste to Landfill'. Our greatest pride is to accompany them on their path to integrate the circular economy into their business model, as reflected in this success story.”
