22th October 2018

The value chain of the cellulose, paper and cardboard globally contributes (direct + indirect + induced contribution) to the economy 4,5% of GDP and generates one in every fifty jobs in our country, according to the report 'Socio-economic importance of the pulp, paper and cardboard value chain' produced by CEPREDE for chain organizations. Likewise, four out of every fifty euros that the industry bills and one out of every fifty euros that the State collects via taxes or social contributions in Spain are related to the activity of this value chain.
Made up of 17.377 companies with employees, the pulp, paper and cardboard value chain directly employs 182.370 people. The direct turnover of the value chain amounts to 23.094 million euros, a figure that represents 2,1% of Spanish GDP. External demand accounts for 25% of the chain's total sales. The global turnover generated (48.471 million euros) is equivalent to 8,8% of the turnover of the Spanish industry and represents 4,5% of the Spanish GDP. The total added value generated (18.378 million euros) exceeds 13,2% of the added value of Spanish industry.
Four out of every fifty euros invoiced by the Spanish industry are related to the activity of the pulp, paper and cardboard value chain. The cost structure of the value chain reveals the importance of the chapter on purchases of raw materials and supplies, which accounts for 48% of total costs, followed by salary costs, which represent 28%. In carrying out its activity, the chain makes purchases from other sectors for an amount of 14.566 million euros and develops investments valued at 842 million euros. Purchases account for 63% of direct billing, almost twelve percentage points above what they represent in the economy as a whole. The chain invests 3,6% of its direct billing, more than one point above the average in the manufacturing industry as a whole. Both purchases and investment are also directed in a very high percentage (78%) to national suppliers, which explains the important drag effect of the value chain in the national economy.
The report 'Socio-economic importance of the pulp, paper and cardboard value chain' has been prepared by CEPREDE (Center for Economic Prediction) commissioned by eight organizations that group the companies that make up the chain: AFCO, Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Containers and Corrugated Cardboard Packaging; ASPACK, Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Containers, Packaging and Converted Cardboard; ASPAPER, Spanish Association of Pulp, Paper and Cardboard Manufacturers; FGEE, Federation of Publishers Guilds of Spain; THE PAPER BAG, Platform of Paper Manufacturers for Bags and Producers of Paper Bags; TABLE OF THE NEW RECOVERY, Platform of Paper and Cardboard Recovery Companies in Spain; NEOBIS, Association of Graphic Communication, and REPACK, Spanish Association of Paper and Cardboard Recyclers.
