Avery Dennison and Dow launch label adhesive that favors recycling

Avery Dennison and Dow

Dow and Avery Dennison have jointly developed a new hot melt adhesive solution for labels innovative and sustainable, which allows polyolefin film labels and polypropylene or polyethylene (PP/PE) containers to be mechanically recycled together in a single stream. The adhesive is the first of its kind in the label market and is Recycled approved for recycling in HDPE – Class B color stream.

Hot melts offer excellent performance on labels for refrigerated applications (such as food), but standard hot melts reduce the usability of recycled PP/PE material. Because this new olefin hot melt is based on the same chemistry as PP/PE packaging, when combined with a polyolefin face material, label and packaging can be treated as one material and recycled together. Therefore, it offers better recyclability than standard hot melts without compromising performance.

The development of the new adhesive is based on Dow's AFFINITY™ GA polyolefin plastomers and is sold by Avery Dennison under the name CF3050 in the Europe, Middle East and North Africa (EMENA) region.

“The joint launch of this new olefinic hotmelt is a great example of how collaboration with partners across the supply chain, like Dow, is key to delivering innovations that help reduce waste, enable plastics circularity and advance in the circular economy”, says Jarkko Pitko, Senior Research Associate at Avery Dennison Materials Group EMENA.

"Dow's goal is to deliver 3 million metric tons per year of circular and renewable solutions by 2030," he adds. Imran Munshi, Global Marketing Manager for Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics. “Collaborations like this will help accelerate our contributions towards a circular economy for plastic packaging.”
