26th September 2023

CPHI Barcelona

CPHI Barcelona, the leading meeting for the pharmaceutical industry worldwide, will take place at the Gran Via venue of Fira de Barcelona from October 24 to 26. Organized by Informa Markets, it will bring together more than 1.800 exhibitors and professionals from 171 countries, representing the entire pharmaceutical supply chain, including ingredient manufacturers, finished dose and generic suppliers, global pharmaceutical innovators, logistics and supply chain providers, as well as machinery.

“Some of the reasons why we have decided to bring the CPHI back to Barcelona are the strength of the pharmaceutical sector in the region, its competitive manufacturing plants and emerging biotechnologies. All of this is reflected in the results of our report, which has given a massive vote of confidence to the Catalan capital and the growth prospects of its pharmaceutical industry by 2024. The event is a true melting pot of ideas, companies and technologies. “It is what makes CPHI so special and is at the heart of the growth of the pharmaceutical industry, not only in Catalonia and Spain this year, but globally,” he adds. Sherma Ellis-Daal.

Barcelona, second European biotechnology hub

El CPH annual reportI is carried out based on a macro survey of executives of pharmaceutical companies around the world and its results are considered key indicators of the growth prospects of this industry by countries and geographical areas for the following year. On this occasion, the study highlights that Spain achieves its best score (6,6) in the history of the ranking with an increase of 17,8% compared to last year, with which it rises 7 places in the classification and reaches sixth world place behind India, the United States, China, Germany and Switzerland. At the European level, Spain is in third place, surpassing the scores of countries such as the United Kingdom (6,3), Italy (6) and France (5,9) and placing it practically at the same level as Switzerland (6,7). . Likewise, Spain also stands out in the sector's global competitiveness index, with an improvement of 12,1%, the highest of all the countries analyzed.

On the other hand, the CPHI report highlights Barcelona as the second best European location for investment in biotechnology, only behind the London metropolitan region and well ahead of the hubs Swiss, Berlin or Paris. This other classification (CPHI European Biotech Index) scores the most productive investment opportunities for biotechnology and start-up companies.

In fact, the international pharmaceutical executives who have contributed their opinions to the preparation of the report advise that Barcelona only needs “increase resources for manufacturing” and/or offer “potential opportunities for inward investment such as tax breaks or investment programs” to see a considerable change in prospects. Significantly, 53% of the executives surveyed predict that the application of measures of this type will make Catalonia a more attractive alternative to the United Kingdom and Switzerland as the European headquarters of American pharmaceutical companies.
