D. S. Smith will expand this year production plant DS Smith Cartogal – located in the town of To Pobra do Caramiñal (Galicia)– after an investment of 11,35 million euros, which will increase both the surface area of the factory and its production and storage capacity. An objective that the company will achieve after several phases of works, which began last March and will last approximately seven months.

The project, which is part of the company's global strategy, represents a major milestone for DS Smith, since it will increase production capacity and improve service to all of the company's customers, as well as open up new opportunities in northwestern Iberia. Following these expansion plans, the DS Smith Cartogal plant will add 6.000 square meters to the current 11.000, becoming a comprehensive Packaging plant of more than 17.000 square meters.

During the seven months that the works are expected to last, the foundation, construction and roofing of the new buildings will be carried out, and a series of improvements will also be made to the current resources, as well as the preparation of the facilities to house, at the end of the year 2023, new machinery. All this, using sustainable and environmentally friendly materials that will provide the new facilities with energy efficiency systems, in line with the company's sustainability strategy. Now and Next, which not only focuses on reducing the impact on the environment today, but expands its responsibility in society to support the transition and acceleration towards a circular economy.

In the words of Ignacio Montfort, Managing Director at DS Smith Iberia: "This expansion of our DS Smith Cartogal plant is a source of pride for all of us who are part of the company, since it will allow us to significantly increase production capacity and thus satisfy the needs of our customers, who are in the center of our universe. Without a doubt, this investment reflects the ongoing commitment that we at DS Smith have to continue to offer the best sustainable packaging solutions, while supporting economic growth in the region.”

This project is a sample of DS Smith's commitment to its expansion and growth in the Iberia region, where it already has 26 plants. In Galicia, the company has – in addition to the one in Cartogal – another 2 plants: the DS Smith Galicia factory located in Vilagarcía de Arousa and DS Smith Tecnicartón Vigo, located in the town of Porriño.
