FEDEMCO

The Spanish federation of wooden containers and their components, FEDEMCO, and the interprofessional association of the Andalusian strawberry, interstrawberry, have signed a new collaboration agreement. The agreement stems from the need to work together to comply with the new national and European regulations on packaging and waste management.

“The European Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste now makes it more important than ever to go hand in hand with fruit and vegetable producers. The red fruit sector from Huelva is of great importance for Spanish wooden packaging and that is why we want to be by your side in this transition towards a more sustainable economic model. In addition, as Interfresa has already expressed, it is vital for our sectors that the information provided is rigorous and based on technical knowledge of production: of the product and of the packaging", he pointed out. Emilio laguna, member of the steering committee of FEDEMCO and signatory on behalf of the federation.

“The renewal of the agreement with FEDEMCO represents further progress in the objective of the Huelva red fruit sector of working for sustainability and good commercial practices. Wood is an essential raw material in the packaging of our products. We must have all the guarantees that these containers, the presentation letter of our fruits in the markets, are produced under the strictest sustainability standards and, of course, that the labeling regulations are followed so that the information is truthful and accessible to consumers. consumers", has valued Jose Luis Garcia-Palacios, president of Interfresa.

The agreement, formalized in Huelva, contemplates the organization of training in packaging, the promotion of good sectorial practices, the fight against intrusion in commercial practices as well as against unfair competition in their respective areas. Guaranteeing a circular economy model that ensures the recyclability of the packaging placed on the market is the ultimate goal.

Regarding the manufacture and preparation of wooden containers for commercial purposes, both organizations will guarantee compliance with the requirements in terms of food sanitation. "It is essential that the containers have the corresponding sanitary registry, the technical data sheets of the packaged product, GROW and NIMF-15 certificate, as well as the corresponding traceability of the product," Laguna pointed out. “At FEDEMCO we accompany our clients to make it easier for them to comply with the new legislation. For this reason, we have developed our own certification, ECOWOOX. The certification that the wooden packaging required is a guarantee of recyclability and, with it, our customers will achieve the recyclability rate required by European law”, he adds.
