Smart Battery Case develops battery boxes with advanced materials for the naval sector

The project Smart Battery Case is a commitment to research and development of more efficient and advanced battery boxes with new materials, for naval transport. From 2022, companies compoxyCooling Photonicsrotimpres y solar box, with the coordination and support of accredited entities such as AEI – Innovative Business Groups – Advanced Materials Cluster of Catalonia and Packaging Cluster, work together to promote electromobility (or use of electric vehicles) with the Smart Battery Case project.

The first step of the project, in which Solarbox has played an important role, has been the previous analysis of the current market, to find out the current optimal characteristics of the batteries, and assess the possibilities for improvement, thus defining the technical and technological needs of the project. With these data, the structural design process of the battery box, intended for ships and naval transport, began.

Now, Cooling Photonics is developing a system with which cool the battery to extend its useful life, its benefits and avoid any breakdown. With this, Rotimpres will be in charge of the sensory integration in the structure of the box that will guarantee the real time management system from other connected devices, as well as the integration of a heater for improve battery efficiency during cold starts. The sensor systems will be integrated into the case material through the printed electronics, a type of additive manufacturing in which advanced materials such as conductive inks are printed to make thin, light, and lightweight electronic devices.

Compoxi will carry out the final validation and evaluation of the data, thus determining whether the use of functionalized materials applied to battery boxes has been achieved, with which to carry out communication tasks, active and passive temperature control, and integral management of the box. .

The expected result of the Smart Battery Case is the creation of knowledge replicable to the naval sector and other industries, on the incorporation of technologies such as additive manufacturing or sensors and embedded systems for greater and better efficient management of batteries.  

The project has received a grant of €228.418 from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism on a budget of €287.00, financing that will help achieve a model based on electromobility – or how to use new technologies for greater energy efficiency – through the cooperation between companies and connected sectors.
