Verdú-Cantó Saffron Spain proposes to value saffron through packaging

November 7th 2022

Verdú-Cantó Saffron Spain, a company specializing in seasonings for cooking and gastronomy, botanicals for cocktails and saffron, has transferred its challenges to achieve more environmentally friendly packaging to the packaging sector in the latest edition of the Breakfasts of the Innovation Cluster in Container and Packaging.

The company, which has been in the spice market for more than 136 years, has different brands. Its director of quality, R+D+i and sustainability, Sandra Sierra, He highlighted the need to "value its star product, saffron, since in recent decades it has been affected by the lack of crops that meet the needs of the industry, thus entering into danger of extinction."

In addition, he highlighted how the company is implementing circular economy actions for the organic waste it generates, since the petals of the saffron flower have great potential for revaluation in the food industry.

Packaging management through SCRAP

On the other hand, he has also intervened in the breakfast Jose Vincent Ronda, CEO Heura Environmental Management, to talk about Envalora, a new SCRAP (Collective System for Extended Producer Responsibility) for industrial and commercial packaging in the chemical, plastic, rubber and construction sectors.

José Vicente has indicated that with the approval of the draft Royal Decree on packaging and packaging waste "packers will no longer be able to delegate the correct management of packaging to the end user, but must assume their own responsibility". A responsibility that the company can assume individually or collectively, and the latter includes SCRAPs such as ENVALORA. It also indicates that companies must adapt to this new regulation and for this, in many cases, they require specialized advice.

In the case of Envalora, 200 companies have already joined, which have declared more than 360.000 tons of wood, plastic, metal and cardboard containers. Finally, he explained that Envalora is designing a system for both reusable and non-reusable containers.
