The world's first carbon-neutral rPET

21th October 2020

ALPLA Group, a global manufacturer of plastic packaging and recycling specialist, presents the first Carbon neutral recycled PET in the world.

ALPLA switched its plants from PET recycling equipment in Wöllersdorf, Austria, and Radomsko, Poland, to a combination of electricity from renewable sources to produce carbon neutral rPET (= recycled polyethylene terephthalate). “This step has already had a major impact on the carbon footprint of our food grade regranulate; according to calculations, emissions are reduced by up to 90% compared to virgin material. Market feedback regarding this further development has been very good, ”explains Georg Lässer, ALPLA's director of recycling.

The company now offers its customers carbon neutral rPET based on the purchase of certificates. Unavoidable remaining emissions related, for example, to the delivery of input material to plants, are offset by carbon certificates.

ALPLA has selected specific projects in cooperation with the climate neutrality alliance Klimaneutralitätsbündnis 2025 and the NGO Helioz. A reforestation project is being supported in Nicaragua. In China, traditional charcoal stoves are being replaced by ovens that run on biomass. These not only greatly reduce emissions, but also prevent the health implications caused by harmful exhaust air. In Ethiopia, 5.000 household packages (modern stoves, vegetable seeds, seedlings, training) are being financed. In regions of Asia and Africa, ALPLA is supporting the Helioz organization, which provides solar devices that control water disinfection using PET bottles.
