Metsä Board designs a recyclable container for Chopin Organic Rye Vodka

May 10th 2021

Metsä Board, part of the Metsä Group, has designed a light but resistant and easily recyclable packaging for the new range Chopin Organic Rye Vodka at their Center of Excellence in Äänekoski, Finland.

For Podlaska Wytwórnia Wódek 'Polmos' SA, the family distillery that produces the brand Chopin Vodka, it was important that the packaging conveyed the spirit of the brand, as explained Joanna Dolinczyk, Chopin Vodka brand marketing coordinator: “When we were looking for inspiration for the packaging design of our organic product, we wanted it to reflect its organic production process. We had an extremely enthusiastic vision of creating a truly organic and highly ecological packaging with three main goals: purity, whiteness and simplicity.

The packaging is made with a protective F-flute, with all layers of light white kraftliner paper of MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright, produced at the Metsä Board Husum factory. Its fresh fibers are 100% traceable to sustainably managed northern European forests.

The all-white litho-laminated packaging has a light and robust structure based on closure flaps that do not require glue. No adhesive, combined with minimal coverage of low migration inks with water-based varnish, the packaging is safe, stylish and easy to recycle. The packaging was manufactured by Prost-Key Packaging in Poland.

The opening mechanism allows the container to be opened and closed multiple times with ease, while also locking the bottle in place. The curved double pleats add strength and reveal the bottle when viewed from the side. The whiteness of the design features the word "organic" embossed on the sides and emphasizes purity.

Iiro NumminenMetsä Board Structural Packaging Designer commented: “Packaging communicates the promise of brands to the consumer in every way. Ease of recycling was also a factor in the design concept, as the importance of circular economy It's essential".

The packaging was designed and tested in the Metsä Board Center of Excellence, which uses cutting-edge technology for R&D, packaging and carton design, to accelerate packaging and materials innovation and provide a collaborative platform for customers and technology partners globally.
