Ball presents its new sustainability goals

June 29th, 2021

ball Corporation today announces its sustainability goals for 2030. These goals are focused on promoting responsible management and social impact to create value among its stakeholders. Additionally, the company shares its vision of how members of this industry could collaborate to achieve a fully circular aluminum beverage packaging system.

new Ball's global sustainability goals, which will drive the performance of your products throughout the entire lifecycle, include a commitment to reduce net carbon emissions to zero before 2050 and the transition to a 100% renewable electricity by 2030. Other company goals are to ensure that all aluminum comes from certified sustainable sources and that 80% of the volume of beverage cans produced by Ball globally are manufactured to the STARcan lightweight can specifications.

To contribute to the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) aspects that the company has been working on for a long time, Ball promotes the dissemination of existing social and Diversity and Inclusion programs with specific objectives for 2025 for each region and business division . For example, Ball Beverage Packaging South America has committed to increasing the proportion of non-white employees in new hires from 31% to 47%. For its part, Ball Beverage Packaging EMEA plans to increase the presence of women in production plants to reach a recruitment rate of 25%.

Along with these sustainability goals, Ball also wants to publicize 'Towards a Perfect Circle' (Vision for a Perfect Circle), showing how beverage brands, retailers, aluminum beverage container manufacturers and their suppliers work together to bring aluminum cans, bottles and cups to a rate of recycling 90% from the current 69%, and a global recycled content rate of 85%. Today, producing recycled aluminum consumes only 5% of the energy used to manufacture virgin material, and a recycled can can be back in circulation in as little as 60 days.

To achieve these goals, Ball is committed to promoting a multilateral plan with the collaboration of different members of the chain and a roadmap to reduce carbon emissions in the aluminum beverage packaging sector. The company will also defend investment in technology and infrastructures that allow a more effective and efficient recycling system in the regions where it operates.

“As a world leader in the manufacture of aluminum beverage containers, Ball has a responsibility to its stakeholders and to the planet to improve its environmental and social impact, as well as to take the lead in the industry in developing solutions that cope with the current climate crisis, "says John A Hayes, President and CEO of Ball.

Ball will collaborate with leading players in the aluminum beverage container industry to develop and implement the best techniques, principles and actions to achieve a fully circular aluminum beverage container system.

“As the world's largest aluminum recycling company, Novelis is proud to partner with Ball on the common goal of achieving more sustainable aluminum beverage packaging and supporting the effort made to drive this long-term collaboration,” he says. --Steve Fisher, president and CEO of novelis.

“Today thanks to our 4.0 technology, BeyondAlea®, our aluminum recycling furnaces are already capable of obtaining high metal yields with minimal energy consumption in fully automated plants. As a leading designer and manufacturer of technology solutions for aluminum recycling, we celebrate Ball's ambition and are prepared to accompany this industry in the transition to circularity in 2030, "he says. Jose Domingo Berasategui, CEO GHI.
