Coty begins production of fragrances made from carbon-captured ethanol

February 4th 2022

Coty

Coty Inc.. has started production of the first fragrances of the world distributed globally made with ethanol from carbon capture.

Production began at the company's manufacturing facility in Granollers, Spain, in mid-January. The first fragrances made with this new ethanol will hit stores in the coming months. This fact represents an advance in the company's goal of integrating sustainable ethanol in the majority of its fragrances by 2023.

Coty manufactures these fragrances with CarbonSmart™ ethanol produced by partner LanzaTech, a leading provider of sustainable ingredients that manufactures ethanol by capturing and fermenting carbon emitted from industrial activity before it is released into the atmosphere. Coty's Granollers plant received more than 20 metric tons of carbon-captured ethanol from LanzaTech in mid-January, ahead of schedule; the first delivery under an announced partnership between the two companies in March 2021.

Ethanol is a key ingredient in the production of fragrances. By transforming carbon into a new source of ethanol, Coty and LanzaTech are developing innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of the beauty industry. Carbon-captured ethanol uses almost zero water and reduces the need for agricultural land, which in turn limits Coty's impact on biodiversity and reduces company carbon emissions related to the production of fragrances.
