202 Catalan wineries attached to the Denomination of Origin (DO) Catalunya will soon have a personalized online tool to calculate your carbon footprint, thanks to a company project inèdit and the DO Catalunya. This is a pioneering initiative within all the denominations of origin in Spain. The objective of this project is "to make available to DO Catalunya wineries a measurement system that makes it as easy as possible for them to design decarbonization plans," he says. The online tool that will be provided is the edit®, developed by the strategic eco-innovation study, and allows measuring the environmental impact of organizations in a personalized, continuous and self-sufficient way, according to regulations such as ISO 14064 and ISO 14046, among others. Thus, inèdit will design an èdit® prepared so that wineries can enter their operational and purchasing data, and calculate their carbon footprint. Although they will be offered support in calculating their carbon footprint and in developing and monitoring decarbonization plans, the goal is for them to be able to do so autonomously in the long term.
Calculate carbon footprint
«Calculating the carbon footprint of a company's activity is "the first essential step to define and implement strategies to reduce environmental impact and evaluate their effectiveness", comments Gasol. It allows knowing the absolute value of the contribution of wineries to greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to providing knowledge about how these emissions are distributed between the direct and indirect activities of the wineries, such as those emitted by the producer of the energy that requires the winery, the suppliers and those issued by the cultivation of the vine itself.
It also allows setting reduction objectives and designing and prioritizing effective actions to achieve this purpose.
The actions to achieve this purpose will be a series of initiatives and actions to reduce the carbon footprint that will be reviewed and validated based on interviews with DO Catalunya wineries.
