Coatings and packaging to prevent waste and food waste

AINIA is working on the development of edible coatings for fresh foods, with the aim of reducing packaging waste and avoiding food waste. In this sense, within the framework of the PREVENCPACK project, work is being done on the design of biobased structures that help extend the useful life of packaged products, through the use of edible coatings and packaging.

This challenge will be addressed from a double perspective: on the one hand, we will work with edible coatings on food and packaging and on the other, with edible packaging for use directly on the product. In this way, PREVENCPACK will develop innovative bio-based solutions that achieve combined improvements in more sustainable packaging (edible packaging and new material presentations) and the protection and preservation of food (edible coatings with active functionalities).

Objective of the European strategy

For years, the European Union has been promoting the reduction of waste, especially packaging, and more recently, the prevention of food losses. The first step in the waste hierarchy is reduction, so the PREVENCPACK project is aligned with this objective, both from the point of view of packaging and food.

The PREVENCPACK project is financed by the IVACE-FEDER call of the Conselleria d'Economia Sostenible, Sectors Productius, Comerç i Treball, aimed at technological centers of the Valencian Community for the development of R&D projects of a non-economic nature, carried out in collaboration with companies in the Valencian Community.
