greaseproof paper lid

EMSUR has presented a greaseproof paper lid developed at Innotech, the open innovation center of the Lantero Group, to complement the packaging solutions of Upfield. This lid guarantees maximum protection of the product throughout the entire supply chain, ensuring that it reaches the consumer's home in optimal conditions. Additionally, the paper-based nature of this solution makes it easy to dispose of alongside paper and cardboard, promoting proper recycling practices and environmental sustainability.

Upfield, a global leader in plant-based foods, announced the world's first plastic-free, recyclable packaging for its plant-based butters and spreads. This launch marks the start of Upfield's shift towards a paper-based solution across its portfolio, in line with the company's ambitious goal to reduce plastic content by 80% by 2030.

The innovative paper tubs, developed from paper pulp fibres, are waterproof, oil resistant and recyclable within local waste paper streams. These tubs, which are Conventional Plastic Free certified and use paper from a PEFC-certified supplier, incorporate a grease-proof paper lid developed by EMSUR, which improves the overall sustainability of the proposal by converting it into a monomaterial.

Jose Herraez, CEO of Emsur, highlights the importance of close collaboration with clients, to fully understand their needs and offer the most effective solutions: “only by being close to our clients can we understand their needs and work proactively to identify the best solutions. . This is the way EMSUR understands the business.”

Alvaro Bernad, innovation director of the Lantero Group, underlines the importance of EMSUR's greaseproof paper lid, highlighting its role in making the tub a totally sustainable material: “not only is it completely recyclable, but it also promises to delight consumers “conscious people who give priority to environmentally friendly options.”

Walter Turci, director of Innotech, reflects on the challenges he faced during the development of the greaseproof paper lid. “Designed as an alternative to the market standard ALU solution, the lid ensures similar performance in food producers' packaging machines and an improved product experience for end customers. Overcoming challenges related to grease resistance and sealing capacity, the Innotech team has dedicated more than 24 months to this project and has ended up proudly presenting an innovative solution that meets our customers' expectations.
